Most housing described as near a hospital is a fifteen or twenty minute drive from it. Brooklyn Centre is a different situation, because MetroHealth's main campus at 2500 MetroHealth Drive is inside the neighborhood rather than a trip away from it. Our home there is roughly five minutes from the campus, which is the shortest drive of any home we have to any Cleveland hospital.
An old neighborhood
Brooklyn Centre is one of Cleveland's oldest west side neighborhoods, settled in 1812 and once a substantial business district in its own right before the city grew around it. Like a lot of Cleveland it has had hard decades, and like a lot of Cleveland it is not finished.
The part people notice first is Archwood Avenue, a residential historic district designated in 1987. It was laid out with unusually wide lots and an unusually wide street, so the largest houses in the original village were built along it. What survives is late nineteenth century Queen Anne, Italianate and Colonial Revival, on a street that still reads as somebody's idea of how a street should look.
Getting around
The neighborhood sits close to Interstate 71 and Route 176, which is what makes the rest of the city reachable without much thought. Downtown is roughly ten minutes. The east side hospitals are further, around fifteen to twenty minutes to Cleveland Clinic, so if your contract is at Cleveland Clinic or University Hospitals this is not the neighborhood to pick.
Drive times are off-peak estimates rounded to the nearest five minutes. Cleveland traffic has opinions, particularly around shift changes.
Who it suits
Anyone working at MetroHealth, plainly. Beyond that, it suits people who would rather be in a neighborhood with some history to it than in a corridor of newer buildings, and who want downtown within easy reach without paying downtown prices.
Our Brooklyn Centre home is a three bedroom house, furnished, with a kitchen and off-street parking. See it on the hospital page alongside the others, in order of how far they actually are, or call us on (216) 306-4821, 8am to 9pm, seven days.
